I'm excited to welcome psychologist and board-certified sleep specialist Dr. Elaine Boland, who has worked as an academic researcher at the University of Pennsylvania as well as as a researcher and clinician at the VA.
Elaine is a longtime friend and someone whose insights I've always appreciated. I recently asked her what she might offer to people who are experiencing elevated levels of anxiety and stress in response to the severe uncertainty, unpredictability, and for many people, precariousness of the current moment.
In this conversation we discuss how she thinks about sleep during periods of heightened stress and anxiety, as well as how she thinks about anxiety more broadly and some strategies for working with it.
Please note that the content of this episode is for informational and educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Because each person’s circumstances are unique, please consult a healthcare professional for any medical questions.
In part 2, Elaine and I talk more about anxiety, and she offers some useful frameworks for understanding the relationship between anxiety and sleep.
